It’s Here!!!

Well finally the day has arrived… and so has the printer. I am now the proud owner of a Canon iPF8000!Sadly the engineers cannot come and install it for a couple of days, so I gonna do it myself. Here goes nothing… wish me luck.I will let you know how i get on with it.

  1. Marcus,

How are you connecting to the printer – USB, Firewire, or IP? We’re having a dog of a time printing to our Canon over IP – it’s incredibly slow! USB just screams, but given that we have multiple machines sending jobs to the Canon, it’s gotta be IP. Canon’s not to sure, and is looking into it, but was curious if others out there are having IP problems too!

  2. Hi Derek,

    We are connecting via USB.

We tried putting the printer on our network, but like you said, it’s really slow.

We have a machine that is dedicated just to sending jobs to the printer.

If you think about the numbers a normal network operates at 100mbps, which is a max throughput normally the Ethernet will be slower in the real world.

USB2 works at constant speed of 440mbps (firewire 400mbps) and therefore is going to be 6/8 times faster sending a job than over Ethernet.

As for wireless networks… forget it.

As we upscale all of our images prior to printing and work in 16bit we often end up with file 500mb plus. We just drag them onto a USB flash stick and walk them over to the machine connected to the Canon. It’s not as easy as it could be, but ir works and it’s quick.

If you have a lot of cash to splash get a Gigabit Ethernet installed… but that is expensive as you need the router, new network cards in your PC’s and maybe even new CAT5 cabling.

Let me know how you get on,

    Marcus.
